Overcoming many family diseases, such as codependency and addiction, starts with education. The Petersen Family Counseling team hosts a family therapy program weekend to help families learn about the effects of addiction and codependency on the family system. We hope that this learning experience teaches individuals how to identify unhealthy behaviors and toxic relationships within their family systems.
Why Is Addiction a Family Disease?
One of the biggest misconceptions about addiction is that it only affects the person suffering from the substance use disorder. In fact, addiction affects everyone who knows the individual. Friends, coworkers, and especially family members. Watching someone you love transform into a different person due to addiction can adversely affect the family system.
Additionally, addiction affects all parts of a person’s life. Addiction endangers a person’s physical, mental, and emotional health, as well as their career, social life, and financial well-being. These aspects can put a family’s livelihood at risk, and cause resentment, anger, and distrust to boil.
History of the Family Therapy Program Weekend
The Family Therapy Program Weekend began in 2015 when Petersen Family Counseling Founder, Kevin Petersen, began working with families recovering from addiction in his private practice.
Kevin had a passion for helping families and wanted to expand the ways he could help families who were suffering from addiction and codependency. In collaboration with a local treatment center, he developed a two-day family weekend program that addresses these issues and educates families.
As the program grew, it began to reach families from across the country and help thousands overcome the struggles of addiction and codependency.
What Do We Do During the Family Weekend Program?
During the Family Therapy Weekend Program, our counselors guide families through a variety of activities and discussions to teach them about the effects of codependency and addiction. Some of the topics our programs cover include:
- Healthy boundaries, accountability, and structure
- Taking care of oneself
- Methods of recovery
- Understanding addiction
- Family issues and patterns
Our workshop also offers education through a variety of methods. In addition to discussions and psycho-education sessions, our participants also participate in:
- Communication exercises
- Role-play activities
These activities can help families better understand what happens to the family system during addiction and recovery. Whether your family comprises of adults or adolescents, there are activities that can help educate everyone.
After the Family Weekend
After the Family Therapy Weekend Program, matters fall into your hands. It’s up to you to decide the next steps your family needs to take. Do you help your loved one find an addiction treatment facility? Do you enroll your family in counseling? Whatever step you take, Petersen Family Counseling is ready to guide you through that process.
